The Delhi High Court has conferred the prestigious Senior Advocate designation on 85 advocates, including 11 women advocates, in one of the largest rounds of senior designations by the Court. The decision was taken by the Full Court following the recommendations of the Permanent Committee constituted under the Delhi High Court Designation of Senior Advocate Rules.
The designation of Senior Advocate is one of the highest professional recognitions in the Indian legal system. It is awarded to advocates who have demonstrated exceptional legal ability, integrity, standing at the Bar, and significant contributions to the administration of justice.
Under Section 16 of the Advocates Act, 1961, advocates are classified into:
A High Court or the Supreme Court may designate an advocate as a Senior Advocate based on merit, professional excellence, and standing at the Bar. Senior Advocates are subject to certain restrictions under the Bar Council of India Rules, including limitations on directly filing vakalatnamas and drafting pleadings.
Receiving the Senior Advocate designation is considered one of the most prestigious milestones in an advocate's career. It reflects years of distinguished legal practice and recognition by the judiciary for excellence in advocacy and legal scholarship.
